Cope, South Carolina

South Carolina Orangeburg County Cope Cope is located in Orangeburg County, southwest of the City of Orangeburg.

It is named for Jacob Martin Cope, a Barnwell County farmer who, in the 1890s, sold a portion of his land for the town and a train depot. Within a year or two, Cope had two churches, several shops, a grist mill, a cotton gin, and a planing mill – proof of how essential railroads were to growth in this area of the state.

Cope's train depot still stands and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Orangeburg is the largest city near Cope. Here is a map of the Orangeburg area.
