4. Free Hosting for SC History & Geneaology Websites

Some of the Internet's best resources are history and genealogy websites, many of which are created by people who simply want to share information they care about. South Carolina is blessed with many of these volunteer researchers.

SCIway is making it easier for people to maintain SC history and genealogy sites by providing them fast, free, permanent web hosting.

If you would like to learn more about hosting a South Carolina history or genealogy website on SCIway, please write us at news@sciway.net.

We promise we will not claim ownership of your website ... we will not alter your pages or place ads on them ... and we will not surprise your visitors with pop-ups. We will provide search capability and link checking for your site.

Here is a list of the SC websites currently hosted on our history and genealogy server:

6. What is SCIway?

SCIway -- pronounced "sky-way" -- is a website about South Carolina. It's the largest and most comprehensive directory of SC information on the Internet. You can use it to find organized links to thousands of other SC sites, and it also offers lots of original content, including maps, charts, and articles.

SCIway is 10 years old. It started as a learning and community service project at The Citadel, where I was the Director of Information Technology Services. After that, it was supported by private funds (my home equity loan) for several years. Today SCIway is completely supported by advertising.

The best thing to happen to SCIway is that my daughter Robin started working on it in the summer of 1999.

From March 1997 to May 2002, we published 37 issues of this newsletter, SCIWAY News. But in the summer of 2002, Robin and I decided to focus our resources on improving the SCIWAY website and increasing its advertising sales. Since then, we've expanded existing sections and created several new ones. Three of our favorites are:

As SCIWAY has improved, our advertising income has grown, and we have been able to hire some great new people. Thanks to their talents and hard work, we can now develop SCIWAY and publish SCIWAY News at the same time.

As always, we welcome and value your comments and suggestions. Please write us at news@sciway.net.
