South Carolina York County Tega Cay
Tega Cay was built in 1970 as a gated community on Lake Wylie
in York County
. The name is Polynesian and means "beautiful peninsula."
As a private community, residents of Tega Cay paid a monthly assessment fee to a development company who arranged for services such as water and sewer, garbage collection, and security. In the early 1980s, residents chose to incorporate as a town in order to protect their interests from the developer's financial problems.
Today, the town has its own police department and children attend school in nearby Fort Mill
. Residents enjoy their lake-side location, tennis courts, walking trailing, and a 27-hole golf course.
