Columbia, South Carolina Music Guide

SCIWAY's guide to Columbia music and musicians is divided into four sections.
  1. The first is devoted to Columbia's professional and recreational orchestras, symphonies, choirs, and quartets. In short, it covers choral and classical music in Columbia.

  2. The second section includes non-profits and other organizations that seek to encourage musical education and enjoyment.

  3. The third list compiles Columbia bands and singers who either play shows in clubs and concerts or produce CDs; these bands focus on rock, blues, bluegrass, country, etc.

  4. The fourth section spotlights wedding and party bands and is an excellent resource for Columbia-area parties, wedding ceremonies, wedding receptions, festivals, and corporate functions.

1. Columbia SC Symphonies, Choirs & Classical Music

  • Benedict College Gospel Choir
    The Benedict College Gospel Choir has been ranked the number one collegiate gospel choir in the United States time and again. The choir performs at urban churches, rural churches, schools, other college campuses, civic auditoriums, and national events.

  • Columbia Choral Society
    Formed in 1930, the Columbia Choral Society holds open auditions for all who enjoy singing and learning about music, specifically choral works.

  • Columbia Community Concert Band
    The Columbia Community Concert Band is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization that has over 80 musicians who perform an average of five concerts each season.

  • Congaree New Horizons Band
    The Congaree New Horizons Band is comprised of 80 senior adults with varying levels of musical experience. The program has grown to four ensembles: the Congaree Concert Band, the Saluda Shoals Explorer Band, the Beginner Band, and the Crescent Moon Jazz Band; it has a chamber music group as well.

  • Heart of Columbia Chorus
    This musical group specializes in a capella, using four-part harmony in the barbershop style, and performs at festivals, community events, and at an annual competition.

  • Lake Murray Symphony Orchestra
    Performing four to six concerts per year, Lake Murray Symphony Orchestra is an all-volunteer community orchestra comprised of amateur and semi-professional musicians who perform a varied repertoire of classical music, light classical music, and pops music.

  • Lexington County Choral Society
    With over 100 members in this community choral group, Lexington County Choral Society specializes in major choral works and choral anthems.

  • Palmetto Concert Band
    The Palmetto Concert Band is composed of professional and semi-professional musicians. The band performs annually for the University of South Carolina Band Clinic in February, at its Memorial Day Concert in May, and on the Sunday before Thanksgiving.

  • Palmetto Mastersingers
    Palmetto Mastersingers is an all male chorus that performs everything from The Beatles to Beethoven and Mozart to Motown.

  • Palmetto Opera
    This group strives to promote local talent while bringing professional opera to the Midlands and South Carolina, so that there is an entertainment, educational, and economic impact on the community and state.

  • Ridge View High School Chorus
    The Chamber Choir consists of 16 students ranging from 9th-12th grade and performs at various community and district events, including local church services, elementary programs, basketball games and more.

  • Sandlapper Singers
    The Sandlapper Singers consist of an ensemble of 30 singers who perform American choral music, past and present, at three concerts annually.

  • South Carolina Philharmonic
    The South Carolina Philharmonic, based in Columbia, performs and promotes high-quality, professional symphonic music.

    Youth Orchestra
    The South Carolina Philharmonic Youth Orchestras is sponsored by Richland County and provides more than 200 students each year with the opportunity to participate in one of three orchestras. Auditions are open to anyone aged 8 through 18.

  • 246th Army Band
    The 246th Army Band was federally recognized in 1939 and is made up of 40 Soldiers who serve in the South Carolina Army National Guard.

2. Columbia SC Music Appreciation & Education

  • Columbia Music Teachers Association
    This non-profit professional organization for independent and collegiate music teachers is dedicated to the enhancement of the art of teaching musical skills and understanding.

3. Columbia SC Bands & Recording Artists

  • After Midnight
    After Midnight is a Columbia-based pop, rock, and funk quintet that performs a rich cache of original songs.

  • Black Bottom Biscuits
    The Biscuits play old-time country and rockabilly music throughout South Carolina and the Southeast at festivals and concert stages as well as barbecue joints and honkytonks.

  • Buried Voices
    The Buried Voices are a hard rock four-piece band from Lexington, SC.

  • Carolina Bluegrass Style
    This four member band plays and eclectic mix including Bluegrass, Newgrass, and classic country around the Southeast.

  • Coconut Cowboy Band
    Coconut Cowboy, a four-piece variety band with a country flavor, plays covers of Buffet to Skynyrd plus a little Motown and Praise.

  • Danielle Howle
    Danielle Howle is a singer-songwriter from Columbia, South Carolina who plays folk and rock music either as a solo musician or with her band the Firework Show.

  • David Michaels
    Solo guitar singer from Columbia, SC, playing country, Americana, pop, blues, and beach music on an acoustic guitar.

  • Day Clean
    Day Clean is a soul, hip hop, folk, and blues duo out of Columbia, South Carolina.

  • Elliott and The Untouchables
    Elliott and the Untouchables is a blues band playing everything from Chicago boogie to Delta blues and Texas shuffles to West Coast jumpin' blues.

  • Frontier Sons
    Frontier Sons blends aspects of indie rock and alternative rock while honoring their Southern roots.

  • High Lonesome Mountain River Coal Train
    This four-piece bluegrass band plays Friday nights at Bill's Music Shop and Pickin' Parlor along with festivals throughout South Carolina.

  • Hootie and The Blowfish
    Hailing from the University of South Carolina, this internationally-known quartet has reached number one on the Billboard chart and blends pop, folk, blues, soul, and rock.

  • Interstate Exiles
    This rock-and-roll cover band from Columbia plays gigs at bars and private events around the state.

  • Jim Morgan
    A multi-instrumentalist, folk musician, and music teacher located in Columbia.

  • Neal Allen
    Solo artist, singer, songwriter, and busker living in West Columbia.

  • The Runout
    A self-described Alt-Americana band from Columbia that mixes storytelling with a hybrid of rock, country, and folk music.

  • Scotland Bailey
    Scotland Bailey is a Christian rapper who fuses hip-hop, pop, rock and R&B music to bring positive messages to youth.

  • Sugarloaf Mountain Boys
    Sugarloaf Mountain Boys is an old-timey bluegrass band from Columbia, South Carolina that performs at festivals, pickin' parlors, weddings, and more.

  • Wide Open Band
    The Wide Open Band bills itself as the "Midlands' favorite party band" and plays in venues in and around the Columbia area.
