SC SC African Americans Notable SC African Americans Augusta Baker From an early age Augusta Baker had a love of stories and books, so much so that her passion lead her to become the first African-American to coordinate youth services for all 82 branches of the New York Public Library. Upon retiring, Augusta Baker came to South Carolina to become the University of South Carolina's Storyteller-in-Residence.
