Pendleton, South Carolina
South Carolina Anderson County Pendleton
Pendleton is located in northern Anderson County. It was Cherokee land when colonists first began to settle here. The Cherokee sided with the British during the Revolutionary War, but ceded their land to the State of South Carolina after the war.
Most of Pendleton's white settlers were Scottish and Irish emigrants who had fought for American independence, but by the 1800s wealthy landowners from the Lowcountry were building luxurious summer homes in the area. They were attracted by cooler temperatures and fertile soil. The mix of hardscrabble mountain farmers and the more educated and socially refined summer population made Pendleton unique among upstate communities during the antebellum years.
