Fight Song

Coastal Carolina University Fight Song – [ listen ]

Gonna play the game & score for us all.
Coastal Carolina takes the ball.
Marches to the goal or kicks it on through.
Proud to be a Chant through and through.

We'll shout our colors, Go Teal!
GO TEAL!
And then we'll yell out, And Bronze!
AND BRONZE!
And our beloved Chanticleers will WIN THIS GAME.

We're the Chanticleers of CCU
Proud to be a Chant through and through.
Fighting like a champ for victory today
We will stand together as we say:

Sock 'em, Bust 'em
That's our custom
Coastal Car-olina!

Cheers & Customs

  • The Chanticleer: One of the most interesting mascots in all of college sports, the Chanticleer (SHON-tih-cleer) replaced the Trojan as the university's mascot in the mid-1960s. At the time, the school was known as USC Coastal Carolina College and was serving as a two-year branch of the University of South Carolina. The goal was to find a mascot that more closely resembled the USC Gamecock, but also represented the Coastal Carolina spirit. Plucked directly from Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales by English professor and basketball coach Cal Maddox, the Chanticleer proved to be the perfect choice – a fierce, cunning rooster with the most powerful crowing voice in the barnyard!

  • Maddox: Coastal Carolina University established a new tradition during their 2011 Homecoming game when they unveiled Maddox, the university's first live mascot. The rooster was chosen for his resemblance to the Chanticleer and named for former CCU professor and basketball coach Cal Maddox.

  • Big South Champions: Since their inaugural football season in 2003, the Chanticleers have worked hard to establish a tradition of winning. The "Chants" (SHONTS) won their first Big South Conference Championship in 2004 – just the second season in the program's history. They have since claimed three more conference championships (2005, 2006, 2010) and notched trademark wins against James Madison Univeristy, Furman University, and Wofford College.
