South Carolina Lake Marion
Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie
were created in the early 1940s by the Santee Cooper Project. Lake Marion covers about 110,000 acres of land in five SC counties: Berkeley County
, Calhoun County
, Clarendon County
, Orangeburg County
, and Sumter County
. It is named for Revolutionary War hero General Francis Marion
, also known as the Swampfox. Both lakes are famous for their populations of landlocked striped bass.
