Cowpens, South Carolina

South Carolina Spartanburg County Cowpens Cowpens is located in Spartanburg County. It was near here, in January of 1781, that Colonial troops roundly defeated the top-notch British unit known as the British Legion. The battle takes its name from its site, which at the time, was simply a cow pasture shared by local farmers.

Their unexpected defeat left the British diminished and demoralized as they pushed north to their final defeat by General Washington at Yorktown in September.

The original battle site is now designated as a National Battlefield by the National Park Service. It is located at the junction of US 29 and SC 11 in Cherokee County. The town of Cowpens is located 10 miles south at the junction of US 29 and SC 110.
