Statistics on Lynchings in the US and South Carolina

The following information was compiled by Michael Trinkley of the Chicora Foundation.

  • Between 1882 and 1968, there were 4,743 lynchings in the United States.

  • Of those lynched, 3,446 – or 72.6% – were black.

  • The whites in this total were often lynched for helping blacks or being anti-lynching.

  • Most of these lynchings – fully 79% – took place in the South with South Carolina ranking tenth nationwide.
