First Baptist Church of York – York, South Carolina
South Carolina | SC Picture Project | York County Photos | First Baptist Church of York
This post-Civil War congregation in downtown York dates to 1866 when the church was founded by 15 charter members, including two newly-freed slaves. At the time, it was called Yorkville Baptist Church. The name of the town was shortened from Yorkville to York in 1915, and the church followed suit.
The current edifice was dedicated on January 10, 1892. Though it has undergone updates since it was built in the nineteenth century, the integrity of the historic sanctuary remains intact. The church, whose motto is “Fellowship of Joy,” also operates a preschool.
