Second Millpond – Sumter, South Carolina
South Carolina | SC Picture Project | Sumter County Photos | Second Millpond
Sumter County is home to several areas of natural beauty where locals can while away the day, such as Sparkleberry Swamp, Swan Lake Iris Gardens, and Poinsett State Park. Second Millpond, seen here from the Liberty Street bridge, is another such place.
Majestic bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) thrive within this millpond that was constructed in 1900. An earthen dam 13 feet high and 850 feet wide created the pond, which covers a surface area of 130 acres.
A boat landing near the Liberty Street bridge allows people to paddle the waters for fishing or recreation. The millpond is owned and maintained by Sumter County.
Reflections on the Second Millpond
Contributor Pia Cerda, who resides on Shaw Air Force Base, says of her above photos, “We drove by here and just had to stop for a picture. Very pretty.”
