The origin of Abner Creek Baptist Church can be traced to this late-eighteenth century dwelling just over the Greer border in Spartanburg County. William and Sarah Hendrix first welcomed people to their log home near the church’s namesake creek for religious gatherings in 1832. Abner Creek Baptist received its charter in 1834 with 21 members. By 1858 the congregation had moved into its first sanctuary adjacent to the Hendrix home. In 1963 a modern church was built across the street from the log home, which still stands in the church’s graveyard.

In 2007 the congregation of Abner Creek Baptist Church, which now serves around 500 members, celebrated its 175th anniversary. The event honored the church’s past, and featured guest speakers encouraged members to fulfill the church’s role by participating in missions. Sadly, the church burned on January 2, 2008 – just months after the anniversary celebration. The cause of the fire was undetermined. The congregation completed the present church in 2010.
