Oak Grove School – Walhalla, South Carolina
South Carolina | SC Picture Project | Oconee County Photos | Oak Grove School
A cornerstone in the the Oak Grove schoolhouse in Walhalla honors its builder, J.L. Hamby, who completed the building in 1880. It likely served students for much of the first half of the twentieth century. Today the school is owned by the Oconee County Soil and Water Conservation District, which is raising funds to restore the school. Once renovations are complete, plans are to use the building as an Agricultural and Natural Resources Environmental Center.
Plans call for the former school to be restored while preserving its original appearance. The environmental center will be handicap accessible and will provide space for educational sessions as well as agricultural meetings.
