This ornate Neoclassical edifice in the Marlboro County was erected in 1910 during the height of the community’s economic prosperity. Following the arrival of the South Carolina and Pacific Railway to McColl, D.D. McColl established the McColl Textile Manufacturing Plant, a cotton processing plant which made the town, named for McColl, quite affluent until the boll weevil destroyed nearby crops in the 1920s. Many of McColl’s downtown buildings, such as Main Street United Methodist Church, reflect the town’s golden age of textile production and rail transportation.
