Centenary Methodist Church – Centenary, South Carolina

South Carolina  |  SC Picture Project  |  Marion County Photos  |  Centenary Methodist Church

This Greek Revival meeting house in the Marion County community of Centenary was built in 1853 to serve the parishioners of Centenary Methodist Church. Centenary is primarily an agrarian community comprised of people who work in the Pee Dee’s tobacco fields.

The church was built on land donated by Captain David Le Gette and was the site of a former Methodist campground. Such campgrounds, including those still active in Dorchester County, served as rural gathering places where Methodists could congregate to hear a circuit-riding minister preach. Many churches formed out of these campgrounds – usually small and simple, such as Centenary Methodist Church.
