In July of 2009, Heath Springs resident David Williams went to town council with the idea of erecting a monument honoring all branches of the military as well as local veterans who have served in wars from the Spanish-American War through Iraq and Afghanistan. Williams proposed building the memorial on the site of the former water tower, which had been recently demolished.

After a successful fundraising campaign, ground was broken for the monument on May 6, 2011. Kershaw pink granite had been quarried from the nearby Flat Rock Quarry and sent to the Georgia Stone Company in Elberton, Georgia, to be cut. On November 11, 2011 – Veterans Day – the memorial was dedicated in a ceremony, and the names of many courageous local veterans can now be read from the monument’s granite base for generations to come.
