As master brewer and owner of COAST, David Merritt practically lives at the North Charleston brewery. It’s not uncommon to spend 14 hour days when the brewing process is in full swing. While David does not describe his occupation as stressful, he does point out that brewing beer is an almost continuous process, offering little opportunities for breaks.
Discovering his passion for brewing beer in 1996, David graduated from the American Brewer’s Guild in Davis, California in 1998. After working for Southend Brewery and Palmetto Brewing Company for several years, David was ready to open his own brewery, which he did in 2007 with the help of his wife, Jaime Tenny. The husband-wife duo was the first to commercially brew an all-organic beer in South Carolina. Cheers!
