Dr. Harry C. Raysor House – St. Matthews, South Carolina

South Carolina  |  SC Picture Project  |  Calhoun County Photos  |  Dr. Harry C. Raysor House

Though this home in St. Matthews has fallen into disrepair in recent years, it was a grand home when it was built in 1905. For years the home belonged to Dr. Harry C. Raysor, a beloved physician from St. Matthews. The Calhoun County town has honored Dr. Raysor on multiple occasions, beginning in 1970 when a community day was named for him. In 1975, Dr. Raysor was named South Carolina Senior Citizen of the Year, and while serving as marshal of the Purple Martin Parade in April of 1976, the stretch of United States Highway 601 that runs through St. Matthews was unveiled as Harry C. Raysor Drive.

Fittingly, his long-time home sits on the town’s main road that now bears his name. A portrait of Dr. Raysor is displayed within the Calhoun County Museum and Cultural Center. Dr. Raysor died in 1981 at the age of 93.
