16-16. South Carolina Total Traffic Accidents and Fatalities and Percent with A Probable Cause of Alcohol or Drugs by County: 1994
ACCIDENTS FATALITIES
ALCOHOL OR DRUGS ALCOHOL OR DRUGS
PROBABLE CAUSE PROBABLE CAUSE
COUNTY TOTAL NUMBER PERCENT TOTAL NUMBER PERCENT
Note: Prior to 1988, alcohol & drug involvement in accidents was based on
the question "Had been drinking or using drugs?" contained in the Uniform
Traffic Accident Report for each driver. Beginning in 1988, alcohol and
drug involvement data are based on the single probable accident cause as
determined by investigating officers who choose the single cause from a
list of 74 probable causes in which 8 concern alcohol or drug usage.
Therefore, 1994 data are not comparable to "alcohol or drug involvement"
statistics published prior to 1988. Due to the restrictive nature in
which the data were compiled, alcohol involvement in South Carolina
traffic accidents is probably understated in the statistics.Source: S.C. Department Public Safety, 1994 S.C. Traffic Accident Fact Book, pp. 39 & 85.
