SC Picture of the Month – Mountain Rest

Mountain Rest is a small community located in Oconee County, just near the Georgia-South Carolina border. Part of the Sumter National Forest, it's a perfect place to escape busy city life and enjoy nature.

Oconee County was inhabited by the Cherokee Indians for hundreds of years until they relinquished their lands in treaties signed in 1777 and 1816. After the American Revolution, settlers from other areas of our state moved to Oconee and founded the town of Walhalla in 1850.

The word Oconee comes from the Cherokee and means "land beside the water" – perfectly describing this rural county that is peppered with lovely small lakes, like the one above, and also framed by the larger Lake Keowee and Lake Jocassee.

Gary DuBose of Seneca took this picture in October 2008; he describes a beautiful fall afternoon where "there was absolutely no wind, and the fall colors were wonderfully reflected in the calm water."

Nov 6-7: Gaston Collard Festival - entertainment, food, pageant, auction & of course, collards! - site no longer exists

Nov 7: King's Tree Trials Horse Race - Kingstree - plus elegant tailgate parties reminiscent of earlier times

Nov 7: Pecan Festival - Florence - "Run Like A Nut" races & fun walk, nearly 200 vendors, juried arts & crafts

Nov 7-8: Revolutionary War Field Days - Camden - re-enactment, hands-on activities, demonstrations, family fun - webpage no longer exists

Nov 11-15: Carolina Beach Music Awards - Myrtle Beach - dancing, parties, and concerts - many are free

Nov 19: Vista Lights - Columbia - tree lighting + family celebration of food, arts, entertainment, shopping - site no longer exists

Nov 20-21: Cocky 'N Tiger Tailgate Party & Family Festival - Columbia - BBQ cook-offs, music, more - benefitg - page no longer exists

Nov 20-21: SC Humanities Festival - Bennettsville - celebrate local history - narrated music revue, walking tours

Nov 21: Jubilee Arts Festival - Bennettsville - live entertainment, arts & crafts from professionals and amateurs - site no longer exists
