SC Picture of the Month – Furman's Fabled Belltower
In the spirit of college football season, this month's picture features the home of the mighty Furman Paladins. You may not know this, but the university has a proud history of athletic success. Its football team has claimed 12 Southern Conference titles, and Furman has more former student-athletes competing at the professional level than any other school in its conference. In 2002, Furman was the only liberal arts college ranked in Sports Illustrated's "100 Best Sports Colleges."
The school's official mascot is a knight on a horse. However, a sportswriter in the 1930s once described the Furman basketball team as Paladins – or heroic people full of chivalry and honor. The moniker stuck, and the student body voted in 1961 to make it the official nickname for all of their sports teams.
This iconic belltower is a beloved part of the school's sprawling campus in Greenville. Furman was founded in 1826 as an academy and theological institute by Richard Furman, a prominent Baptist minister from Charleston. The school has since evolved into a renowned liberal arts college that has produced two governors, two US congressmen, 17 Truman Scholars, six Rhodes Scholars, a Nobel Laureate, and a Pulitzer Prize winner!
Mauldin's Calvin Kelley, Sr, who took this stunning picture in June 2009, also shared with us an interesting bit of folklore. He says, "The story is, if you kiss your girl in the belltower, she will become your bride." If anyone has any personal experience to back this up, please write us at news@sciway.net and let us know!
