From Seed to Stellar – Renowned South Carolina Trees
The palmetto is South Carolina's "State Tree" and perhaps its most beloved symbol, serving as the centerpiece of our flag. As far as trees go, however, South Carolina has more than its fair share of beauty. From pine forests to cypress swamps, and from quirky topiaries to stately oaks, a wide variety of species thrive in our state's soil. We even have 14 national champion trees – meaning they are the largest of their species anywhere in the United States!
August is the perfect time of year to enjoy South Carolina's many trees – most of all, the shade provides a welcome respite from the heat. So after you take a dip in one of our state's refreshing "swimming holes," spread out a blanket and enjoy the breeze under one of our wonderful trees!
