SC Picture of the Month

Hampton Plantation sits along the Wambaw Creek in McClellanville, inviting visitors to wander its sprawling grounds. Once a wealthy rice plantation, it now serves as an interpretive site where people can learn about rice culture and the history of slavery.

Hampton Plantation
—  EVENING SHADOWS AT HAMPTON PLANTATION | SEE MORE  —

Many prominent South Carolina families have lived at Hampton Plantation, including the Horrys, Pinckneys, and Rutledges. President George Washington even visited the plantation, which is how the great "Washington Oak" in front of the house received its name.

Special thanks to Katherine Schneider of Mount Pleasant, who painted this lovely piece of artwork entitled Evening Shadows at Hampton Plantation in July 2009. You can see more of her artwork by visiting her blog, Paint Charleston Daily.

Calling All Photographers & Artists! Over 72,000 different people view our gallery every month. Submitting a picture is a great way to bring attention to you or your town. Please send us your pictures and help us celebrate South Carolina's history, culture, and beauty.
