South Carolina Waterfalls

South Carolina is home to some of the Southeast's most stunningly beautiful waterfalls and cascades. They spill over glossy granite walls, plunge hundreds of feet down rocky cliffs, and barrel down boulder-strewn whitewater rivers.

Many people – even natives – may be surprised to learn just how many waterfalls exist along South Carolina's rivers and creeks. (The answer? Well over 30!) Our coastal towns serve as popular places to escape the summertime swelter, but a refreshing dive into a cool waterfall plunge pool is one of our state's secret escapes. Beaches are crowded during the summer tourist season, but tranquility can still be found in our Upstate wilderness.

There are numerous trails leading to these waterfalls, some journeying through our popular state parks. The trails range from easy river strolls to more strenuous overnight forest hikes. In our gallery, we link to detailed directions to help you get started on your adventure. For those of you who want to visit these natural wonders from the comfort of your desk, we feature beautiful photographs and even a few videos.

You will also find anecdotes from fellow South Carolinians who have visited the falls. It's important to note that most waterfalls in our state are best viewed after a good rainstorm. Also, SCIWAY's gallery is not a comprehensive list of waterfalls in South Carolina, since there are several for which we don't yet have photos. If you have a picture to share of a waterfall we're missing, or if you have a story or some helpful advice about a waterfall we do have, please write service@sciway.net.

Win $100 in Our "SC Swimming Holes" Photo Contest

Working on our SC Waterfall Gallery has gotten us to thinking – what about the many other delightful swimming holes which abound in our state?

From gentle mountain streams to the mighty Atlantic Ocean, our state practically overflows with oases. Whether you're sunning on the shores of Lake Murray or boating past the banks of the Great Pee Dee, summer is the perfect season to immerse yourself in South Carolina's special escapes.

It's also the perfect time to celebrate them, which is why SCIway is hosting a $100 photo contest called "SC Swimming Holes." Just submit your photo and a 75-word description here. (75 words is an estimated minimum; you are welcome to make your description longer if you'd like.)

We will narrow the entries down to five, then open the vote up to all 40,000 of our SCIWAY News subscribers. All South Carolina swimming holes will be considered, but please be aware that we cannot publish photos that prominently feature people. Images that call attention to the natural beauty of our state are preferred. Entries are due by July 31, 2009.
