1. "SCIWAY on the Highway" Visits Georgetown

Georgetown sits right between Charleston and Myrtle Beach, but it is much more than just a stop between the two. Throughout its history, this beautiful harbor city has been a hub for industries from rice and indigo, to timber, to steel and paper.

When we traveled to Georgetown last month, we learned it was also a keystone for colonial and early America. In fact, Georgetown was once among the wealthiest cities in the nation! The following photos will give you a glimpse of Georgetown's rich past and its vibrant present, as well as a foreshadowing of what the future may hold for this seaport town – which, like many towns across South Carolina, has been hit extremely hard by recent economic events.

One major boost to Georgetown's economy could come from Santee Cooper, which has created the Palmetto Wind Research Project to determine whether there is enough offshore wind to build a wind farm off South Carolina's coast. If South Carolina embraces wind technology, it could bring 11,000 jobs to our state – with almost no pollution or health hazards.

2. What's New with SCIWAY News?

Starting last month, we began sending SCIWAY News in two short issues instead of one long one. One issue – like this one – will feature photos from our "SCIWAY on the Highway" roadtrips.

Our other issue, published the third week of the month, will include our SC Calendar of Events for the following month. It will also include our perennially popular Photo of the Month!

We hope that breaking SCIWAY News into two will help make it more manageable and reader-friendly for all of you! Please reply to this email or write news@sciway.net if you have any feedback or suggestions. We really appreciate feedback!
