1. SC Soundtrack – Send Us Your Suggestions!

We recently stumbled across a neat idea from the editors at Southern Living – an iTunes mix of songs intended to encapsulate the South Carolina music scene over the past few decades. It's pretty cool, and we definitely recommend you check it out. But with much respect to the editors for their great idea, some of the artists and songs aren't necessarily the ones we would have picked ....

Which led us to think about what our SC soundtrack might sound like. And then we had an even better question ... what would your SC soundtrack sound like? Which South Carolina songs do you think are the best for reminiscing, dancing, or singing along?

With that in mind, we are asking you to send your suggestions for "must-haves" on an SC music compilation to service@sciway.net. The songs should either be about our state or by an SC artist. From your votes, we'll pick about twelve songs to be included on the mix. Then we'll publish the winning list in next month's newsletter and on iTunes.

You'll be able to access and download the mix from iTunes to use for road trips, gifts, or Palmetto-themed get-togethers. So dig through your memory, and your music collection, and let us know what you'd like to hear on the "soon to be released" SC Soundtrack!

4. SC Picture of the Month & Town Clock Gallery

The October Picture of the Month comes to us from the skilled brush of Gene Brigman, who spent a great deal of his life in Winnsboro. Gene remembers the clock being the focal point of the town.

Winnsboro is hosting the 11th annual Rock Around the Clock Festival this weekend (October 5-6). The festival includes a parade, a hot-dog eating contest, live music, a classic car show, and much more.

5. SC Town Clock Gallery

Gene's painting reminds us that South Carolina has some really special town clocks. You can find them all over our state, in towns like Abbeville, Cheraw, Greer, Hampton, and Winnsboro. We would like to create an online gallery for these clocks, complete with pictures and historical information. If you have a photo, drawing, or painting of your town's timepiece, send it (with your description) to service@sciway.net. You can also submit your entry using our online form.

7. The ACE Basin: A Natural Refuge for Humans and Wildlife

South Carolina has a natural haven unlike any other along the eastern seaboard: the ACE Basin. At roughly 350,000 acres, it is one of the largest protected estuaries in the country.

Located between Charleston and Beaufort, the ACE Basin is formed by the confluence of the Ashepoo, Combahee, and Edisto. These rivers, their creeks and marshes, and the surrounding forests and undeveloped land make the ACE Basin an ideal home for a variety of wildlife – and an incredible place for people to visit!

Of course, your very own SCIway.net decided we better go check all this out, and on a beautiful late September day, we did just that. We brought you back some great photos, useful info, and hopefully, a bit of fresh air.

The Basin is home to a wealth of endangered and threatened species such as bald eagles, ospreys, woodstorks, loggerhead sea turtles, and shortnose sturgeon. Its location and pristine environment also make it an important stopping point for migratory birds. Similarly, its waters provide a breeding ground for many fish and shellfish species, thereby contributing to the overall health of the SC seafood industry.

The ACE Basin remains undeveloped thanks to the conservation efforts of many people, including private landowners, conservation groups, and government agencies. Their successful land management practices have carefully protected one of South Carolina's greatest treasures.

For a closer look at the area and its overwhelming beauty, come explore the ACE Basin with us.

And for a guide to outdoor activities, boat landings, and fishing and hunting regulations in the ACE Basin, check out the Visit the ACE Basin website.
