South Carolina  |  SC Picture Project  |  York County Photos  |  Rose Hill Cemetery

This historic cemetery in York was established in 1829 and is privately maintained by the families of those buried here. It was built on the site of York’s first church, the Independent Presbyterian Church, which was organized in 1813 but was longer extant by 1864.

Many prominent South Carolinians were laid to rest at Rose Hill, including Asbury Coward, one of the two founders of King Mountain Military Academy and an early member of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church. Kings Mountain Military Academy closed at the end of the nineteenth century, and the Episcopal Church Home for Children opened in its place in 1909. Today the organization is called York Place and is a support center for at-risk youth and their families.
