Salters Depot is located in the small unincorporated community of Salters in Williamsburg County. The depot dates back to the mid-nineteenth century, when it served as one of many South Carolina depots along the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad.
Contributor Linda Brown, who took the photo below, also shares this about the depot’s history:
It was built in the 1850s at the time the railroad came to Williamsburg County and served Salters for approximately 100 years. Salters was, of course, known for many years as Salters Depot or Salters Station. The late Charlie Walker, radio personality and columnist for the Kingstree News, never called Salters anything but Salters Depot, although he pronounced the last syllable of “Depot” as you would a cooking utensil.
