Camp Greenville spans 1,600 acres and serves as a summer camp, conference center, and environmental education facility.
In 1776, a makeshift log fort located at the tip of Sullivan’s Island defeated British troops who were trying to enter Charleston’s harbor. The spongy palmetto logs used to build this fort deflected the barrage of British cannon balls and were the key to its success. The fort was eventually named Fort Moultrie after Colonel Moultrie who led the attack against the British. After this battle the palmetto tree became the centerpiece of South Carolina’s state flag.

Today, Sullivan’s Island is mainly residential with a small, but lively, downtown area that has many restaurants and bars. Historic Charleston is the largest city nearby and is just a short drive away.

The pier has a tackle shop as well as an arcade and a small cafe. It is an old-fashioned, laid back place. At the end is a covered shelter where you can have a drink and listen to music on weekends. There is no fee to walk out on the pier, but you do have to buy a ticket to fish.

It is here at beautiful Table Rock that the Cherokee believe their god sat on the mountain peaks and used the rocky ledge as his table to feast upon.

The Hopewell Treaty was signed in 1785 between the Cherokee Indians and the United States government which laid out boundaries for white settlers who were interested in living in the area. Soon after the treaty was signed, Pumpkintown was formed by European settlers, and people have continued to live in the Table Rock area ever since.

The state park spans over 3000 acres which have been either donated or purchased from Pickens County and private citizens so that all South Carolinians can enjoy its beauty. Table Rock State Park boasts two lakes, campgrounds, meeting facilities and an historic lodge (pictured below), most which were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. These structures are listed in the National Historic Register.

The park is one of our state’s first nature education programs, and is a trail head for the 80-mile long Foothills Trail through the Blue Ridge Escarpment. The most popular trail in the park is of course the one which leads to the top of Table Rock Mountain itself.

Lara says, “This picture is actually in my backyard. I was on the way out the door to work one cold morning and looked up and saw this! I immediately ran and got my camera. It is one of my favorite shots.”

Rodger describes his picture: “Sunrises and sunsets traditionally are favorite subjects for photographers. I couldn’t pass up this Cherokee County sunset with its beautiful colors, wispy clouds and thin crescent moon showing off above a darkened Autumn tree line. It’s what Carolina sunsets are all about.”

Teri Leigh Teed took this photo in October of 2009. She says, “October sunsets are dramatic pieces of art over Lake Monticello. Often overlooked by nearby Columbians, this clear and tranquil lake offers a peaceful respite and beautiful photo opportunities. The drive up Highway 215 is full of rolling hills and heavily wooded scenic views.”
