A few families lived in the area as early as 1788, but the town itself was not formed until the Cheraw-Lancaster Railroad built a depot here in 1904.

This image is copyrighted.
In 1907, 157 residents signed a petition to incorporate the area and named it Pageland after Adolphus High “Dolly” Page. Page was the C&L engineer responsible for bringing the railroad through town.

The railroad no longer exists, but Pageland’s close proximity to Charlotte still brings many travelers its way. Several large industries and distribution centers have set up shop in Pageland, and there is a collection of small businesses downtown.

This image is copyrighted.
Importantly, this rural community is also home to many farms, such as the one pictured above. Its sandy soil is particularly well-suited for growing melons and peaches. Known as the “Watermelon Capitol of the World,” Pageland hosts the Watermelon Festival each July to celebrate this delicious summertime treat!

Many thanks to Chris Austin for sharing these pictures he took in 2012. Want to see this farm yourself? Check out the map below for its location!

The Gaston Livery Stable in Aiken was constructed in 1893 and is made entirely of locally-produced brick. Of the five brick barns remaining in South Carolina, it is believed to be the oldest. At two floors and 12,000 square feet, it is also one of only four barns in the country to still have an original carriage lift.

This stable is eligible to be listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Unfortunately, its eastern end is badly damaged. If it continues to deteriorate, the building’s structural integrity will be endangered. Thankfully, Friends of the Gaston Livery Stable is working to repair it so it will be around for at least another century!

Once the stable has been fully restored, there are plans to use it as a living history museum. As the group’s president, Coleen Reed, notes, “Aiken takes great pride in its uniqueness. Our heritage sets us apart from other communities. The equine, transportation, agricultural, and Winter Colony history are all combined in this structure.”

SCIWAY thanks D.S. Owens of Aiken for this great information and picture he took in December 2011.

Jacksonboro is in a very rural area now, but in the late 1700s it was on a busy stagecoach running between Charleston and Savannah. During the Revolutionary War, when Charleston was occupied by the British, the South Carolina General Assembly held meetings here. The Senate met at the Masonic Lodge and the House met at a local tavern.

Before Walterboro became the county seat in 1817, Jacksonboro served as the original seat of local government for Colleton County.

This photo was taken by Rebeccah Connelly of Charleston in August of 2010. She tells us, “We had been wandering around Jacksonboro and happened to take a Westvaco road to cut through back to the highway. We happened upon this farm that had some of the most impressive scenery I’ve seen in a while. Gorgeous!”

This barn is on a farm near the Smithboro community about five miles outside of Mullins. Many of the old tobacco barns have been left to rot away slowly or have been torn down, but some have been saved and converted into usable buildings and even into homes.

Many thanks to George Smith of Mullins for providing this picture and historical information.
