Aiken Post Office

The old Aiken Post Office, built in 1912, is located on the corner of Laurens Street and Park Avenue in downtown Aiken. The building is a beautiful example of Classical Revival architecture, and the exterior remains nearly unaltered today. It is now home to the Savannah River Nuclear Solutions.

Elliott Post Office

The Elliot Post Office in Lee County is located at 1724 Elliott Highway in downtown Elliott. Information about the history of the Elliott Post Office is scarce, but it is definitely an old structure that currently has not had any extensive renovations. It is still in operation and continues to serve the residents of Elliott.

Madison Post Office

The small community of Madison, near Westminster, was named after Fort Madison. The fort was an old block house used by residents to protect themselves from Indian uprisings.

Sycamore Post Office

The small town of Sycamore is located just west of the town of Allendale, at the junction of US 321 and SC 641. The community is named after the Sycamore Plantation, which was established here in the 1850s by William Ransome Barker.

Nena Barnett of Simpsonville took this picture in July 2010. She says that “as we were traveling the back roads of South Carolina we came across this cute little post office. It was in a rural neighborhood, and even though it looks like a doll house, it is a functioning post office.”

Trio Post Office

The small town of Trio is located in Williamsburg County, just outside of Andrews. Many thanks to Jill Moore of Georgetown took this picture in the summer of 2004.

She writes: “My husband and I were out riding our motorcycle one Saturday and saw a sign for Trio (pronounced with a long I). I had seen this sign many times, but had not seen this little town. So we drove through and the old post office caught my eye. I felt it represented Trio because the town is slowly dying. I understand that Trio use to be a thriving little train community, but the trains are gone now, and the town is reverting into just a few buildings at the cross roads.

“These little towns remind me of what use to be and puts my imagination on overdrive. What ghosts are wondering the town? Does one still hear the train whistles? Were there cattle pens for holding animals for shipping to market? Where was the general store? Did the general store have a pickle barrel, and sell boiled peanuts and RC Colas? These are some of the things that I think about when I see an old, dying town.”
