Dawne Dunton, who captured the shot above, describes the scene like this: “A morning sunrise at the beach is something I love to do know matter what time of the year. Sunrises are different every day. I may miss a few here and there, but the best ones are always the ones I do see. This is my favorite place to see them.”

Brown Pelicans once nested along coastal areas from Mexico to North Carolina, but today they only nest in North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana. The Deveaux Bank Heritage Preserve within the ACE Basin is a very popular nesting spot for the pelicans.

Joanna Thurman of Conway captured this great shot, and says that she “much prefers winter at Myrtle Beach to summer, as one is more likely to have close encounters with visitors of another type, such as this Brown Pelican. I always carry a little camera in my pocket, and this day it paid off by providing me with a very fond memory. I chuckle every time I look at it because the bird was such a character.”

The Grand Strand is an area of coastal towns in Horry County and Georgetown County. In 1954, Hurricane Hazel devastated our state’s coast, and as a result many buildings and trees were leveled along the Grand Strand. During the 1960s, Myrtle Beach began rebuilding, focusing mainly on constructing the golf resorts, beachfront hotels, and entertainment venues which it is now famous for today.

This stunning sunset in Myrtle Beach was taken by Cheryl Farley on a trip to deliver a boat up to North Carolina. She writes:

“There was a storm coming the next morning, and we were scrambling to get the yacht that we were delivering to New Bern, tied up securely in anticipation of the high winds and seas. My husband actually missed the entire sunset, because he was working in the engine room of the boat. I took five minutes from my duties of storm tying the boat, to snap about 20 shots of this sunset. It was the most spectacular sunset I had ever seen.”

Austin Bond, who contributed the stunning sunrise shot above, describes the scene: “During high school and college I loved taking scenic photographs of sunsets. I’m really not a morning person but I thought it might be neat to experience a sunrise and capture it on film. I photographed a few sunrises while spending a week at the beach and this was my favorite one. I was impressed with how beautiful a sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean was. Of course, after taking a few photographs I crawled back in bed (I was on vacation you know).”
