Williamsburg County Courthouse

The Williamsburg County Courthouse is located in downtown Kingstree on Short Street. It is an original Robert Mills design and was built in 1823.

From 1953-1954 the courthouse’s interior and exterior was substantially remodeled, but the building still reflects much of Mills’ original vision.

The Williamsburg County Courthouse is listed in the National Historic Register.

Black River Egrets

This lively shot of a group of egrets on the Black River was taken by Michaele Duke of Greeleyville. Michaele writes: “This favorite perch sits in the middle of a small pool of water on the Black River. It can be viewed from US 52 near Kingstree and provides a resting spot for the many migrating birds that stop here. The visitors put on quite a show as their loud greetings can be heard when fellow travelers come in for a landing.”

Kingstree UMC Church

In this photograph, a silhouetted figure works on the steeple of the United Methodist Church in Kingstree. The shot was taken by Michaele Duke of Kingstree in the winter of 2006.

Michaele writes: “This church sits across from my workplace in Kingstree. This past winter they did some major renovations and scraping and painting the exterior was part of the process. The silhouette of the worker’s out-stretched arm along with the height of the steeple caught my attention.”

Situated right on the edge of the Pee Dee, Williamsburg County is home to the historic town of Kingstree. Its name comes from the “King’s Tree” – a particularly tall white pine marked for the King of England. The king reserved such trees to be used as masts for the British Navy.

Kingstree was originally known as Williamsburgh Township, founded in 1732. The area was settled as an effort to provide a buffer between Native Americans and white colonists along the coast.

Taking the Amtrak

In November 2008, we decided to take the train for our trip from Charleston to Kingstree. We rode the Palmetto, both in the morning and on our return trip later that evening.

We found Amtrak to have on-time service, friendly personnel, and clean accommodations. The relaxed atmosphere, roomy seats, and panoramic windows made it easy to enjoy South Carolina’s rural scenery.
