Many thanks to Summer Gagnon of Aiken for sharing this photo she took in July 2011.

Summer writes: “I took my daughter to Folly Field to see the sunrise and enjoy a lazy summer Sunday on the beach. I was standing on the boardwalk leading to the beach, admiring the beautiful sea oats. This photo became an instant favorite.”

This 90-foot tower was built in 1970 – the first privately-financed lighthouse to be constructed since the early 1800s. Many visitors enjoy the beautiful view the lighthouse offers of Hilton Head, Daufuskie Island, and the Calibogue Sound.

The red and white lighthouse is the backdrop of the final hole of the popular Harbour Town Golf Course, and it has become a widely-recognized landmark. There is a gift store at the top of the lighthouse and historical information about the area within. Even though the tower was built to be more of a symbol for the area than to assist with navigation, its light can be seen 15 miles away.

See the view for yourself with the Harbour Town Lighthouse webcam!

This photo shows the morning sun rising over a field of summer marsh on Hilton Head Island. Marsh grass (Spartina alterniflora) is green in the summer and turns golden in the fall.

This image is copyrighted. You may not use it without written consent.

It is extremely important to coastal South Carolina ecosystems as the detritus it produces is a source of food for many sea creatures (like shrimp and fiddler crabs). Wild animals and birds also depend on it for habitat. Further, marsh helps filter our water to keep it clean and protects us from floods.

SCIWAY thanks Valérie Loiret of Neuilly, France for this picture she took in August 2007. Valérie says that “it was 7AM in the morning after driving my daughter to camp. I walked in the woods near the beach because the light was wonderful, and the pathway cleared into this stunning view of marshes, fluorescent emerald green coloured against the wooden architectural lines of the boardwalk. This photo won a nature contest in France.”
