Suber’s Corn Mill, located in Greer, has been owned and operated by the same family since 1908. The corn that is ground here is turned into cornmeal, grits, and animal feed and is sold locally. Not much has changed at Suber’s Mill since its doors opened. The buildings are original and the mill uses water power to grind the cornmeal. Then it is packaged and weighed by hand!

Downtown Greer was originally called Greer Station, because it was little more than a quick stop on the Richmond and Danville Air Line Railway. In 1876 the town was incorporated and emerged as a textile and agricultural center, and the small village grew from a simple rail depot to a town of 3,000 residents.

This image is copyrighted. You may not use it without written consent.

Greer Station was the focal point of business, commerce, and entertainment for the community up to the 1960s. Unfortunately, growth began to decline due to the rapid expansion of outlying suburban areas.

However, in 1998 a local group called the Partnership for Tomorrow came together to make Greer Station the focal point of the city. New streetscape improvements and extensive building restorations have brought 40 new businesses to the downtown area, where this town clock now stands.

Steven Faucette of Williamston took this picture. Be sure to visit Steven Faucette’s website to see more pictures of the Upstate.

It was founded by the late Ernest Harvey after a fire destroyed the nearby Powdersville Opry House, and is still owned and operated by his family. The Greer Opry House prides itself on providing a family-friendly atmosphere. There is a snack bar which serves sodas, coffee, hotdogs, fries, and more. The bands who perform there play a variety of country, bluegrass, and much more. Dancing is commonplace at the Opry, which is open Friday and Saturday nights.

SCIWAY contributor Vincent Flores says that this is a “beautiful park in which young and old enjoy watching the large fountain dance with the rhythm of music. It has an amphitheater, swing for viewing the fountain, and a walking lane for those who like to walk around the park.”
