Sumter Opera House – Sumter, South Carolina
South Carolina | SC Picture Project | Sumter County Photos | Sumter Opera House
Located at 21 North Main Street, the Opera House is the pride of downtown Sumter. Built between 1893 and 1895, it is actually the second opera house to stand on this site. The first was lost to fire in 1892.
Well over a century later, the Opera House still plays an integral role in Sumter. Today it offers live performances, such as theater and concerts, and even features a “classic movie night” on the second Friday of each month. You can learn more about this history of the Sumter Opera House, as well as find its current show schedule, by visiting the City of Sumter’s website here.
SCIWAY thanks Larry Gleason, who hails from Aiken, for this beautiful photo. Larry notes that it was an especially difficult shot, explaining “It is not an easy building to photograph because of height on a narrow street.” We love how this picture captures not only the Opera House, but also the surrounding stores and street, creating a special glimpse of life in downtown Sumter!
