The building was constructed in 1907 and is a classic “I-plan” courthouse, which means it is set back from the street and runs the entirety of a block. This style was popular for courthouses during this time because of its grandeur.

SCIWAY thanks Stephen Brenton of Ladson for this great picture taken in 2012. For more information on the Sumter County Courthouse, see its listing in the National Historic Register.

The purpose of the South Carolina Picture Project is to celebrate the beauty of the Palmetto State and create a permanent digital repository for our cultural landmarks and natural landscapes. We invite you to add additional pictures (paintings, photos, etc) of Sumter County Courthouse, and we also invite you to add info, history, stories, and travel tips. Together, we hope to build one of the best and most loved SC resources in the world!
