William Barret Travis was co-commander of the Alamo during its siege in early 1836. Travis lost his life early in the battle, falling near the fort’s northwest corner, close to where the Gibbs Building stands today. Hailing from what is today Saluda County, Travis was James Bonham’s second cousin and a lawyer by trade.
