Lower Whitewater Falls – Oconee County, South Carolina
South Carolina | SC Picture Project | Oconee County Photos | Lower Whitewater Falls
The Lower Whitewater Falls in Oconee County are part of the Whitewater River, which begins in North Carolina and descends approximately 1,500 feet in a distance of 3.5 miles. The falls drop a spectacular 400 feet down a rocky cliff within the Jocassee Gorges.
The two-mile trail which leads to Lower Whitewater Falls begins just north of Lake Jocassee, near the North Carolina state line. The hike is a beautiful one because it leads through an untouched forest of evergreens and deciduous trees and provides a great view of the river.
For non-hikers, people may park and walk a short distance to see the incredible view of the falls and the Jocasee Gorges without having to hike to the falls themselves.
Reflections on Lower Whitewater Falls
