Located in the county seat of Bishopville, the Lee County Courthouse was completed in 1908, just six years after the county’s formation. It was designed in the Classical Revival style by Darlington native William A. Edwards. At the time it was considered one of the finest, most modern courthouses in the state.

Edwards designed eight other South Carolina courthouses including the Abbeville County Courthouse, the Jasper County Courthouse, and the Dillon County Courthouse.

Felix Anthony “Doc” Blanchard, a native of McColl, grew up in Bishopville South Carolina. This monument of him is located in Bishopville where sculptor Robert Allison has masterfully captured Doc’s life in three stages. The three statues represent Blanchard’s boyhood, his football career at West Point, and his career as an Air Force pilot. The nickname “Doc” was given to him because he was the son of a doctor.

This image is copyrighted. You may not use it without written consent.

Blanchard followed his father’s footsteps as a college football star, signing with the University of North Carolina out of high school. He then transferred to West Point in 1944, and teamed with Glenn Davis to create one of college football’s finest backfield duos. Blanchard was nicknamed “Mr. Inside” for his bruising runs between the tackles. He was a three time All-American at West Point and became the first SC native to win the Heisman Trophy in 1945.

After his football career, Blanchard became a pilot in the US Air Force, winning a medal for bravery during the Vietnam War. He passed away on April 19, 2009 at the age of 84, and remains the only SC native to win the Heisman Trophy.

Lynchburg Presbyterian is one of the last remaining buildings from the original town of Lynchburg, which became South Lynchburg after a railroad was built just north of the area in 1854. The community that sprang up around the railroad adopted the name Lynchburg, and the original Lynchburg became known as South Lynchburg instead.
Its historical marker reads: “This church was established in 1809. Its first building, a frame church, was built 1.5 mi. N on Broad Branch. The congregation moved to this site in 1829 and built a second church, also a frame building, in the 1830s. Mt. Zion’s longest serving minister, Rev. William M. Reid, was the pastor here from 1833 to 1872. The cemetery here dates from 1830, and the session house was built in 1851. A third frame church, built in 1855, burned in 1910. The present Neo-Classical Revival brick church, designed by the firm of Wilson & Sompayrac, was built in 1911.”

Mt Zion has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places since 2003.
