The Savannah National Wildlife Refuge, which spans both the South Carolina and Georgia sides of the Savannah River, is a 29,000-acre wildlife refuge seven miles below Hardeeville on the South Carolina side. Designated a National Wildlife Refuge in 1927, a variety of habitats exists within its vast perimeter, including tidal rivers, freshwater marshes, and bottomland-hardwood forests.

Located on the Atlantic Flyway, the refuge is home to wood storks, great blue herons, swallow-tailed kites, and bald eagles among other coastal birds. Also thriving in the waters of the refuge are alligators, manatees, and sturgeon, making this refuge a pristine ecosystem unfettered by the nearby city of Savannah, Georgia. The refuge is open to visitors seven days a week during daylight hours.
