Vereen Memorial Gardens – Little River, South Carolina

South Carolina  |  SC Picture Project  |  Horry County Photos  |  Vereen Memorial Gardens

Vereen Memorial Park and Gardens are located in Little River, near North Myrtle Beach in Horry County. Jackson Hiram Vereen, who was born in Little River in 1882, deeded the land to the Horry County Historical Commission. Vereen Memorial Park is now part of the Horry County Park and Recreation system.

The gardens are home to a variety of wildlife, as well as the historic Vereen family cemetery, which includes Revolutionary War graves. Trails and boardwalks travel through the park and along scenic marshes. Also, one of the last few unpaved stretches of the Kings Highway (PDF) goes through Vereen Memorial Gardens.

You can find the gardens on SC 179, just north of Little River near the North Carolina-South Carolina state line.

BJ Thurman of Conway took this picture in July 2010. She writes: “I discovered the gardens by chance one day when working in the area. That evening I went for a look and a walk and took this photo. The park is an exceedingly nice place to walk, with wooded trails, boardwalks through the marsh, and an observation deck overlooking the intracoastal waterway.”

We discovered Vereen Memorial Gardens on our trip to Myrtle Beach this year (2012). We enjoyed it very much. It has portable toilets (very nice—didn’t smell at all!), boardwalks and trails over and around the marsh and through wooded areas. Very peaceful. If you want to get away from the beach crowds and enjoy some quiet nature walks and maybe view some egrets or herons, this is a great place to go.

A very beautiful place, serene and scenic. If you love birds you’ll see lots of them at the right times. Also very hard to find – the town of Calabash or Little River should help with some well-placed signs! Loved it and will come back.
