Traveling through rural South Carolina may be the best way to experience our state’s beauty. Winding two lane highways can take you from coastal beaches and marshlands, past farms and homesteads, to mountains and cascading upstate falls.

BJ Thurman of Conway took this picture in August 2009 as she drove along the Pee Dee Highway in Horry County. She writes, “What attracted me to the scene was the variety of interesting trees – palmetto, magnolia, and cedar to name three – and the illumination of the barn by the setting sun.”
