Myrtle Beach – Horry County, South Carolina
South Carolina | SC Picture Project | Horry County Photos | Myrtle Beach
Myrtle Beach is probably what comes to mind for many out-of-state visitors when they think of vacationing in South Carolina. In addition to 60 miles of beaches, this bustling city has many attractions, golf courses, and restaurants.
The Grand Strand is an area of coastal towns in Horry County and Georgetown County. In 1954, Hurricane Hazel devastated South Carolina’s coast, and as a result many buildings and trees were leveled along the Grand Strand.
During the 1960s Myrtle Beach began rebuilding, focusing mainly on constructing the golf resorts, beachfront hotels, and entertainment venues for which the beach town is now famous.
As seen in the festive photo below, summer is not the only popular time of year at Myrtle Beach!
Reflections on Myrtle Beach
SCIWAY visitor Kat Harris says, “Early morning before the beach is filled with tourists and locals is the only time the hotels are silent, and the beach is peaceful.”
Contributor Gregg Turbeville shares of his photo, “Spring and summer are finally approaching, and the beach will soon be full, but some of the best times at the beach are during the ‘off-season’ when it can be quiet, peaceful, and relaxing. I took this early one morning when setting up to do some family shots for a friend.”

Myrtle Beach Add Info and More Photos
The purpose of the South Carolina Picture Project is to celebrate the beauty of the Palmetto State and create a permanent digital repository for our cultural landmarks and natural landscapes. We invite you to add additional pictures (paintings, photos, etc) of Myrtle Beach, and we also invite you to add info, history, stories, and travel tips. Together, we hope to build one of the best and most loved SC resources in the world!
