Longs – Horry County, South Carolina
South Carolina | SC Picture Project | Horry County Photos | Longs
The small, unincorporated community of Longs is located in Horry County (pronounced Oree). It is about 14 miles north of North Myrtle Beach. Even though this small town remains rural and fairly undeveloped, its close proximity to the popular Grand Strand area has started to attract new residents.

Thank you Bob! As I’m sure you know, correct pronunciation of places is a big deal in South Carolina. We do know the correct pronunciation of ‘Horry’ however, I can see that our way of phonetically spelling it was confusing. Your spelling of “Oree” hopefully will convey much better to those who don’t know how to pronounce Horry County.

It is ‘Oree,’ French last name, silent ‘H.’
General Peter Horry served under General Francis Marion during the ‘War for American Independence,’ AKA ‘The Revolutionary War.’
If it were not for the SC, NC, GA, and TN patriots, who ran Cornwallis out of the South, Washington would have not been able to bottle him up at Yorktown.
Our county is named in Peter Horry’s honor. http://www.hchsonline.org/peterhorry.html .
