Harmony Presbyterian – Crocketville, South Carolina
South Carolina | SC Picture Project | Hampton County Photos | Harmony Presbyterian
This church in the Hampton County community of Crocketville was established in 1870. It sits on land next to the Whippy Swamp Muster Grounds, used in 1840 by the Whippy Swamp 12th South Carolina Militia. The property, then in Beaufort County (Hampton County was not established until 1878), was the site of many picnics, speeches, drills, and other activities.
Several members of the Whippy Swamp Guards served in the Civil War. Following the war, a militia house which had been erected near here for gatherings was torn down.
The cemetery behind Harmony Presbyterian Church is actually the Crocketville Cemetery and unrelated to the church, though many church members are buried there. Though the church is still active, membership is quite small.
