South Carolina | SC Picture Project | Greenville County Photos | SC Highway 11
South Carolina Highway 11 in Greenville County is also known as the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Byway. The road winds through 112 miles and five counties – Cherokee, Spartanburg, Greenville, Pickens, and Oconee, taking travelers through the South Carolina foothills and the lower peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The stretch of road pictured here will guide day trippers to the Poinsett Bridge, Casear’s Head, or the Estatoe Valley. The highway is popular with motorcyclists and bicyclists for its winding road, challenging hills, and spectacular mountain views.
The road received its name, Cherokee Foothills Scenic Byway, for the Cherokee Indians who originally inhabited this area. English and French fur traders conducted business along this road as well. Today it is not only a route to South Carolina’s majestic mountains, but a destination in itself.
