The beautiful Harbor House Inn is situated along the Sampit River in Georgetown. The historic three-story building has stood for over two centuries and is now a luxurious bed-and-breakfast inn.

The Georgian-style house was built in 1765 and belonged to Dr Charles Fyffe, physician and member of the Winyah Indigo Society. The house was confiscated during the Revolutionary War and passed through many owners before Herbert Tarbox purchased it in 1936. Today, his granddaughter Meg is the owner and innkeeper.

The Harbor House was completely renovated in 1990 and the Tarbox’s were able to preserve a lot of its original charm. The original heart pine floors and eight fireplaces are still in place.

The popular bed-and-breakfast is known for its Southern hospitality. A Southern gourmet breakfast is served every morning, and in the afternoon guests can snack on crab or shrimp dip. Freshly baked cookies are also available 24 hours a day!

Esther Fogle wrote to SCIWAY in July 2008 to tell us about her stay here. She says that “one of the Georgetown ghost stories associated with this house speaks about the sea captain and his daughter who lived there. She was in love with another sea captain. Her father did not like nor approve of him. When she knew her sweetheart’s ship was coming in to dock, she would place a lantern in the top window facing the dock to let him know her father was away and it was safe for them to be together. Tragically, his ship sank and he died. People say at night, you can still see the lantern in the window!”

There are four spacious guestrooms available at the inn, and each has a private bath, television, wireless internet, and a waterfront view. You can reach Meg Tarbox at 843-546-6532 to make a reservation.

Hi. I’ve stayed here before several years ago but had heard it was closed. Is this B & B open for business again?
Thanks, Rod
