Chunks of kaolin sit on the floor of the potter’s studio. Kaolin deposits are plentiful in the Edgefield area, found along the geographical belt that extends from Chesterfield to Aiken County, and across our borders into North Carolina and Georgia.
Interestingly, the South Carolina nickname “Sandlapper” also comes from kaolin.

What was the kaolin that was mined in and around Aiken used for, or who was it produced for? In the 50′s as a teenager, we went swimming in the clear blue ponds where that mining caused (unbeknownst to our parents, of course).
